Gamma-Amino Butyric acid (GABA) is an amino acid which acts as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. It inhibits nerve transmission in the brain, calming nervous activity. As a supplement it is sold and promoted for these neurotransmitter effects as a natural tranquilizer. It is also touted as increasing Human Growth Hormone levels and is popular among body builders.

γ-aminobutyric acid is a compound with the chemical formula C₄H₉NO₂, also known as 4-aminobutyric acid (γ-aminobutyric acid, GABA for short). It is an amino acid that is widely present in vertebrates, plants and microorganisms. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an important central nervous system inhibitory neurotransmitter with good water solubility and thermal stability. It has been confirmed that GABA, as a small molecular weight non-protein amino acid, has food safety and can be used in the production of beverages and other foods.
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a chemical that is made in the brain and also found in some foods. In the brain, GABA has anti-seizure and anti-anxiety effects. GABA works by blocking brain signals (neurotransmissions). A certain amount of GABA has physiological effects such as improving the body's sleep quality and lowering blood pressure.
YANGGEBIOTECH solvent extraction method uses water or alcohol as the extractant of GABA. According to the principle of the solubility of plants in water or alcohol and the different partition coefficient, GABA is extracted into water or alcohol, and after repeated filtration and purification, it can be used in plants. The vast majority of GABA is extracted.
GABA is synthesized by another amino acid neurotransmitter, glutamate, in a reaction catalyzed by glutamate decarboxylase, as shown in the figure below.
Although the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) allows GABA to be added to food and stipulates the upper limit of dietary intake of GABA is 550mg/d, its main functional properties still need to be supported by strict population test results. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pointed out that it is safe to add GABA to food based on the results of toxicology experiments. The scope of use includes beverages, coffee, tea and chewing gum, but it is not allowed to be added to baby food, meat products or meat-containing products.
The content of GABA in plant tissues is extremely low, usually between 0.3 and 32.5 μmol/g. It has been reported in the literature that the GABA enrichment in plants is related to the stress response experienced by plants, and GABA will accumulate rapidly when subjected to stresses such as hypoxia, heat shock, cold shock, mechanical damage, salt stress and so on. After the plant food raw materials are treated with a certain stress method, or through microbial fermentation to increase the GABA content in the body, the processing of this raw material into GABA-rich functional products has become a research hotspot. As a new type of functional factor, GABA has been widely used in the food industry. Foods developed using raw materials such as GABA-rich germinated brown rice, soybeans, and broad beans are already on the market.
For the most bang for your buck, these Amazing Nutrition GABA capsules offer the highest dose of GABA at a great price. Each pill contains 750 milligrams of GABA, and there are 100 pills per bottle. Plus, these pills are entirely vegan and are free of gluten, sugar, artificial sweeteners, soy, and yeast. They are also non-GMO. Best yet, hundreds of Amazon reviewers rave that these have improved their daily sleeping habits and reduced feelings of anxiety and stress.
