structure
β-Alanine is the only spontaneous amino acid in biochemistry, and its amino group is located at the β-position of the carboxylate. According to IUPC nomenclature, it should be called 3-amino-alanine. Unlike its common analog, L-α -alanine, β-alanine has no chiral center.
metabolism
In organisms, β-alanine does not participate in the synthesis of proteins or enzymes. Usually, it is produced by the degradation of dihydrouracil and carnosine. β-alanine is also an important component of the spontaneous peptide carnosine and vitamin B5. Under normal conditions , β-alanine is finally metabolized into acetic acid.
Physiological effect
β-Alanine is one of the rare precursors of carnosine. It has been proven that supplementation of β-alanine helps to increase the content of carnosine in muscle tissue, thereby eliminating (athlete) fatigue and improving muscle activity.
The supplemental dosage of β-alanine is considered to be 3.2 to 6.4 per day to overcome the side effects of β-alanine. Many weightlifters, bodybuilders, and athletes use this supplement to improve the effectiveness of training. Both male and female athletes use this supplement, and these supplements should be useful for people who are training but have reached a steady state of physical fitness.
